Deciduous vine. Vigorous climber with reddish flossy shoots when young. Leaves are broad, ovate and large. Rich crimson and purple fall color. Climbs by means of tendrils. Attractive to bees, butterflies and/or birds. Flowers bloom from May to July, and the seeds ripen from September to October. After the flowers small fruits appear colored purple to black, and they taste very good, making wonderful jelly. Moderate to regular water needs once established.
