Deciduous shrub. Loosely branched, upright shrub. Leaves are palmately lobed and serrated, dark green. Flowers are small, red, and tubular borne in long, showy racemes. Dark blue, pea-sized berries covered with stalked glands and white waxy bloom; edible but unpalatable. Young twigs are round, green becoming smooth and reddish brown with age. Bark is reddish brown to grayish brown. Little to moderate water needs once established.
