Deciduous shrub [evergreen in warm winter areas]. Large, fast growing suckering plant. Mostly used for ornamental foliage, paddle shaped leaves that grow 2′ wide and 6′ long. Cream to yellow flowers may appear in summer on mature plants or those that do not freeze to the ground. Small, green, inedible fruit can form after flowering. Although still referred to as Japanese banana, more recent information indicates these originated in China. Moderate water needs once established.
