Deciduous shrub. Native to parts of California, southwestern United States, and even northern parts of Mexico. Straw-colored branches with flaky bark. Deep green, lobed leaves are rust colored on the underside. Simple, white, rose-like flowers bloom in spring and summer. Flowers are followed by billowy seed-heads that age to pink and sometimes red. Low water needs in well-drained soil once established.
