Deciduous perennial. Deeply cut, textured leaves with rigid spines grow up to two feet long. Can tolerate drought, but will go dormant in hot weather if not watered, then come back to life when it begins to rain. Tall spikes of white flowers with mauve accents are held high above the foliage clump. Blooms late spring to early summer. Moderate to regular water needs once established. Adaptable to various soil conditions. Hardy to 0°F and below.
