Deciduous tree. Usually found in areas with maritime influence. Dark green leaves are rust-colored and hairy underneath. Attractive bark is light gray and smooth. Can take brackish water or somewhat saline underground water. It is a favorite of tent caterpillars. Regular to ample water needs once established.
