Deciduous perennial. This California native species is related to sunflowers and is important for birds and pollinators. Upright grower with long, slender almost leafless stems topped with unusual flowers in summer to fall. Tiny, bright yellow petals hang down from showy ball-shaped centers. While blooming they attract many types of pollinators. If you allow flowers to fade and go to seed, they are attractive to small birds especially native finches. Will also reseed, allowing the clump to spread naturally. Happiest in hot summer areas and good soil, they will tolerate poor soil. Will tolerate some drought, but flower and look their best with moderate watering once established.
